About

Labiaplasty

The term labiaplasty refers to a procedure that reduces the length of the labia minora. It is the most commonly performed aesthetic genital plastic surgery and it can relieve symptoms women experience from twisting and tugging of the labia. The goal of the procedure is to reduce the labia minora so that they don't hang below the hair-bearing labia majora. A labiaplasty may be performed to reduce asymmetry when one is longer than the other, or, more commonly, to reduce the length of both labia so that the labia no longer twist, tug or fall out of a bathing suit.

Technique

TRIM (LINEAR) TECHNIQUE

Involves removing a strip of skin from the donor area and dissecting it into individual follicular units for transplantation. The trim technique is the original form of labiaplasty and as such, has been performed for longer than any other technique. This makes the procedure well known and relatively risk free. This method reduces the size of the inner labia, improves labial symmetry and can lighten dark labia.

WEDGE TECHNIQUE

The wedge method is a newer labiaplasty technique which has been gaining in popularity because of its natural-looking results. The procedure has been in use since the 1990’s and is well-practiced among most plastic surgeons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure performed to alter the labia minora (the inner lips) or labia majora (the outer lips) of the vulva. It's often done to reduce the size or change the shape of the labia for aesthetic reasons or to alleviate discomfort.

Candidates for labiaplasty are typically women who experience physical discomfort or emotional distress due to enlarged or asymmetrical labia minora. They may also seek the procedure for cosmetic reasons, wanting to alter the appearance of their genitalia.

There are several techniques used in labiaplasty, including trimming excess tissue, wedge resection, and laser reduction. The choice of technique depends on factors such as the patient's anatomy, desired outcome, and surgeon's preference. Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate technique for your individual case during the consultation.

Recovery from labiaplasty varies from person to person but generally involves some discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the treated area. Patients are typically advised to avoid strenuous activity, sexual intercourse, and wearing tight clothing or underwear for a few weeks after surgery. Pain medication and ice packs may be recommended to manage discomfort and reduce swelling.

The results of labiaplasty are usually long-lasting, but factors such as aging, childbirth, and fluctuations in weight can affect the appearance of the labia over time. It's essential to maintain good overall vaginal health and hygiene to preserve the results of the procedure for as long as possible.
